Director of Compensation & Benefits
Director of Compensation & Benefits
About the Company
A leading national provider of mission-critical infrastructure services, this PE-backed organization operates across two distinct business lines — planned infrastructure work supporting electric utilities and an emergency/event response division that mobilizes rapidly in response to major weather events and disasters. With approximately 1,000 core employees that flex significantly during peak demand periods, the company operates across 35+ states and has grown significantly through acquisition. The organization is in an exciting and dynamic phase — a newly appointed CHRO is building the HR function from the ground up, consolidating multiple legacy systems and programs into a unified, scalable platform.
The Opportunity
This is a true builder role for a hands-on compensation and benefits professional who thrives in ambiguity and has done this before. You will be the sole dedicated comp and benefits resource, reporting to the CHRO, with a benefits coordinator coming online within approximately one year. This is not a role for someone who manages process — it's a role for someone who creates it.
The organization has a mix of union (approximately 40%) and non-union employees across two divisions, multiple benefit programs that have not yet been consolidated post-acquisition, and a bonus and incentive structure that needs to be designed and managed with intention. If you want to build something and leave a mark, this is the environment for it.
What You'll Do
- Own compensation and benefits strategy and administration end to end as a solo practitioner
- Manage and evolve the company's bonus and incentive plans across both divisions
- Lead the consolidation of multiple benefit programs into a single, unified platform
- Serve as the primary relationship manager with the benefits broker
- Partner with business unit managers across two divisions on comp-related decisions
- Navigate the complexity of a workforce that includes both union and non-union populations
- Work within the existing HRIS ecosystem (UKG, ADP, Paylocity) and support ongoing platform rationalization
- Build the infrastructure, policies, and processes that don't yet exist
- Serve as a thought partner to the CHRO as the HR function matures
What We're Looking For
- A compensation and benefits professional with experience in a larger, structured public company environment who has successfully transitioned into a smaller, more complex organization — and thrived
- Someone who has genuinely built a comp and benefits function before, not just managed one
- Demonstrated experience working with both union and non-union employee populations
- Comfort with post-acquisition complexity — multiple legacy systems, fragmented benefits, inconsistent practices across business units
- Hands-on by nature — this role requires someone who will roll up their sleeves without being asked
- Strong working knowledge of incentive and bonus plan design and administration
- Experience managing benefits broker relationships and open enrollment processes
- Familiarity with UKG, ADP, and/or Paylocity a plus
- Exposure to industries with variable or seasonal workforce demands is a plus
- Bachelor's degree required; CCP or CEBS designation a plus
