Director of Transportation and Fleet Compliance
About the Opportunity
A well-established, multi-division industrial and environmental services company is seeking a Director of Transportation & Fleet Compliance to provide strategic leadership across all transportation regulatory compliance, fleet performance, and telematics operations. This is a high-impact role for a compliance-driven leader who thrives in a complex, fast-moving environment and is passionate about safety, operational efficiency, and building high-performing teams.
The company operates across Washington, Oregon, Idaho, and Hawaii, with projects spanning the Pacific Northwest and beyond. Its service lines include industrial cleaning, spill response, hazardous waste disposal, commercial and petroleum construction, and industrial electrical — supporting clients in pulp and paper, oil, manufacturing, and other heavy industries.
Position Overview
Reporting to divisional executive leadership, the Director of Transportation & Fleet Compliance owns the organization's entire transportation compliance program — from FMCSA and DOT regulatory adherence to ELD/telematics administration, fleet lifecycle management, safety risk reduction, and budget oversight. This role also serves as the enterprise-level administrator and subject matter expert for the Samsara platform.
Key Responsibilities
Transportation Regulatory Compliance
• Ensure full compliance with FMCSA, DOT, and applicable state transportation regulations
• Oversee HOS compliance, driver qualification files, Drug & Alcohol Clearinghouse, IFTA reporting, IRP and Unified Carrier registration, and vehicle maintenance records
• Lead DOT audits, compliance reviews, and roadside inspection responses
• Monitor and manage CSA scores; implement corrective action plans as needed
• Chair accident review boards and manage post-incident regulatory compliance
• Develop proactive audit-readiness strategies to minimize risk exposure
ELD & Telematics Oversight (Samsara Platform)
• Serve as enterprise-level administrator and SME for the Samsara ELD/telematics platform
• Conduct weekly ELD audits to proactively identify and prevent violations
• Oversee HOS violation prevention, driver log management, DVIR compliance, and driver safety scorecards
• Develop internal dashboards and executive-level reporting using Samsara data
• Train drivers, dispatchers, and managers on ELD usage and compliance expectations
Fleet Management & Asset Control
• Lead preventative maintenance programs for all fleet vehicles and heavy equipment
• Develop fleet lifecycle strategy and asset replacement planning
• Monitor fleet utilization, downtime, and repair trends
• Implement cost-control initiatives across fuel, maintenance, and asset management
Safety & Risk Reduction
• Partner with Safety leadership to reduce vehicle incidents, HOS violations, and roadside inspection failures
• Develop leading safety indicators using telematics data
• Implement driver coaching programs targeting harsh braking, speeding, idle time, and other behavioral metrics
• Support insurance audits and EMR improvement initiatives
Policy, Compliance Programs & Continuous Improvement
• Develop and maintain transportation compliance SOPs and driver handbook standards
• Lead continuous improvement initiatives across compliance, cost efficiency, and fleet performance
• Deliver executive-level reporting on compliance metrics, safety indicators, and fleet KPIs
Budget & Financial Oversight
• Develop and manage the annual fleet and transportation compliance budget (fuel, maintenance, repairs, and CAPEX)
• Partner with Finance and Operations to forecast expenses and identify efficiency opportunities
• Lead fleet lifecycle planning including asset acquisition, replacement strategy, and capital planning
Leadership
• Lead and develop a high-performing transportation compliance and fleet team
• Drive change management related to systems, processes, and regulatory updates
• Champion a culture of accountability, safety, and continuous improvement
Required Qualifications
• 7–10+ years of progressive experience in transportation compliance and fleet management
• Extensive knowledge of FMCSA and DOT regulations
• Advanced administrative-level expertise with the Samsara ELD platform
• Strong understanding of CSA scoring methodology
• Proven experience preparing for and managing DOT audits
• Demonstrated success implementing compliance programs and corrective action plans
• Valid driver's license required
Preferred Qualifications
• Bachelor's degree in Transportation, Logistics, Business, or a related field
• Certified Director of Safety (CDS) or equivalent credential
• Experience in industrial services, environmental services, or heavy equipment operations
• Experience building KPI dashboards using telematics data
• Knowledge of hazardous materials transportation regulations (49 CFR)
