REQUIRED EXPERIENCE:
Must-Have:
- Reliability and punctuality: This role starts at 7:00 AM, and showing up on time every day is non-negotiable. The scale house is the first point of contact for every vehicle entering the facility, and the operation cannot run without someone in that seat.

- Valid Iowa driver's license: Required to be insured under Commission guidelines.
Nice to Have:
- Experience in a government or public-sector environment: Familiarity with the formality and accountability expectations of a public agency would help you ramp up quickly.
- Prior landfill, waste management, or utilities experience: Not required at all, but any exposure to solid waste operations, scale house work, or regulated facility environments is a plus.
- Bilingual (English/Spanish): Given the variety of customers coming through the facility, Spanish language skills would be a bonus, though not required.
THE OPPORTUNITY
Our client is a public agency serving the residents and businesses of Black Hawk County, Iowa through responsible, sustainable waste management operations. Their facility is a growing operation that handles solid waste, recycling, and special waste streams for the region.
This Scale House Attendant role serves as the operational anchor at the landfill entrance. You are the first person every customer and hauler interacts with when they arrive, and your accuracy, professionalism, and consistency set the tone for the entire visit. The work is largely desk-based, with most of your day spent in the scale house booth processing vehicles in and out, but you will also assist with the Small Loads Area and other support functions as needed.
Because our client is a relatively new standalone commission for Black Hawk County, it is still building out its team and internal structure. That means real opportunity for people who prove themselves. This is a stable, full-time government role with room to grow as the organization continues to expand its services and capabilities.
WHAT YOU’LL DO
Scale House Operations (Primary Focus):
- Weigh inbound and outbound vehicles using scale systems and record accurate data into the waste management software
- Identify waste categories (residential, recycling, commercial, industrial) and verify proper authorizations and codes
- Direct customers and haulers to the appropriate areas of the facility
- Collect fees, issue receipts, and reconcile cash and charge transactions at the end of each shift
Reporting and Records:
- Prepare daily and periodic reports as required by facility management
- Maintain accurate records of all transactions and activities processed through the scale house
- Flag discrepancies and notify management of recurring issues
Customer and Regulatory Interaction:
- Answer phone and in-person inquiries about landfill hours, load requirements, fees, and acceptable materials
- Identify and screen for special or banned waste materials as vehicles arrive
- Enforce Commission policies and applicable regulatory requirements
Facility Support:
- Assist with Small Loads Area operations as needed
- Respond to operational disruptions, including hot loads, equipment issues, and weather events
- Perform general housekeeping duties to keep the scale house office clean and orderly
WHY THIS ROLE
Our client is a government-backed operation with the stability that comes with serving a county of over 130,000 people. This is not a seasonal or temporary position. It is a full-time role with consistent hours, a predictable schedule, and the kind of job security that is hard to find.
The Commission is in a growth phase. As they continue to expand services and build out their team, the people who are already there and performing well will be first in line for additional responsibilities and advancement. If you are someone who shows up every day, does the job right, and takes pride in your work, this organization will notice.
The role also comes with the satisfaction of doing something that matters. Solid waste management is an essential public service, and the people who keep that system running help protect the health and environment of the entire county.
