Materials manager
Senior Materials Manager → Director of Operations Track (CPG Manufacturing Industry)
Location: Greater Austin, TX (onsite Monday-Friday)
Compensation: $90-120K base + benefits (401k match, health insurance with employer contribution up to $650, PTO, 10 paid holidays)
Reports to: Chief Operating Officer
Direct Reports: Oversight of 15-20 warehouse staff
Growth Path: Clear advancement to the Director of Operations role

Required:
- SAP hands-on experience required - must have Materials Management (MM) module daily usage; implementation experience strongly preferred
- 5+ years warehouse operations management or materials management in manufacturing/high-volume distribution with direct team leadership responsibility (10+ people)
- Proven experience managing warehouse staff with a hands-on, boots-on-the-ground leadership style (not desk-based planning)
- Experience supporting new production equipment implementation or warehouse startup/scaling operations
- Strong cross-functional collaboration skills - ability to work effectively with engineering, quality, production, and sales teams
- Communication versatility - can bridge technical teams (engineers) and senior leadership (non-technical audiences)
- Entrepreneurial approach to problem-solving with a focus on operational profitability
Nice to Have:
- Bachelor's degree; Master's in Supply Chain, Operations, or Business preferred
- Experience in consumer goods manufacturing (food & beverage, CPG, home goods, cutlery, or similar)
- Greenfield plant start-up or new production line implementation experience
- Procurement or vendor coordination background (supporting role, not primary requirement)
- Bill of Materials (BOM) understanding and production planning familiarity
- Lean, Six Sigma, or continuous improvement certifications
- Amazon FBA/Seller Central expertise
- APICS (CPIM or CSCP) certification
- International supply chain experience
- Master Scheduler or demand planning background

The Opportunity
Our client, a high-growth manufacturing and distribution company in the Greater Austin area, is seeking a Materials Manager with the strategic vision and operational expertise to advance into a Director of Operations role overseeing end-to-end supply chain operations.

You'll have the unique opportunity to implement efficiencies, optimize inventory practices, and build collaborative systems across a high-volume warehouse operation handling thousands of SKUs across multiple distribution channels including Amazon FBA, D2C, and wholesale.
What You'll Do
Warehouse Operations & Team Leadership (PRIMARY FOCUS):
- Lead and develop warehouse operations team: Directly manage 15-20 warehouse professionals, including Warehouse Supervisor, Inventory Analysts, and Shipping/Receiving staff, with hands-on floor leadership (not desk-based oversight)
- Manage daily warehouse operations: Oversee receiving, put-away, inventory management, picking/packing, and shipping processes with a focus on accuracy, efficiency, and safety
- Own inventory strategy: Develop and execute inventory and replenishment strategies, ensuring product availability across all customer channels, including Amazon FBA; manage FBA inventory lifecycle, including pre-positioning and replenishment scheduling
- Optimize warehouse processes: Implement cycle counting programs, physical inventory procedures, warehouse layout optimization, and continuous improvement initiatives
- Manage carrier relationships: Oversee shipping and receiving operations with carriers (FedEx, UPS) to optimize logistics performance and dock scheduling
- Build team capability: Coach, train, and develop warehouse staff through clear standards, performance management, and leadership development
New Production Line Implementation Support:
- Support new production equipment rollout: Coordinate materials management for new manufacturing equipment, design warehouse processes to support new production requirements
- SAP system integration: Ensure new production line equipment and materials flow are properly configured in SAP S/4HANA, work with IT and engineering on system requirements
- Materials flow design: Establish receiving, storage, and distribution workflows for new production line materials and finished goods
Manufacturing & Procurement Coordination:
- Partner with procurement team: Coordinate with the Engineering & Quality department (who manage vendor relationships and purchasing) on materials planning, warehouse readiness for incoming materials, and inventory level optimization
- Support manufacturing operations: Ensure material availability for production schedules, coordinate materials flow to production lines, optimize raw materials and work-in-process inventory levels
- Collaborate cross-functionally: Partner with manufacturing, quality, engineering, sales, and e-commerce teams to align materials planning with production capacity, promotional activity, and product launches
Systems, Analytics & Continuous Improvement:
- Optimize SAP S/4HANA: Provide leadership in Materials Management (MM) module usage and optimization, integrate warehouse management systems, label printing, and mobile shipping solutions
- Drive performance improvement: Develop and track warehouse KPIs, conduct root cause analysis, implement corrective action plans
- Support S&OP processes: Participate in Sales & Operations Planning, ensuring warehouse capacity and inventory align with demand forecasts
- Advance analytics capabilities: Implement Power BI dashboards for warehouse performance tracking, scenario planning, and inventory optimization
