Position Overview:

Our client is seeking an experienced and skilled Journeyman Machinist to join our team. This role involves operating, maintaining, and troubleshooting various machinery and equipment to produce high-quality components and perform industrial maintenance. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in tool and die making, the ability to reverse engineer parts, and a commitment to maintaining safety and quality standards.

Day-to-Day Experience:

As a Traditional Journeyman, you will be expected to “cross trade lines,” taking on responsibilities beyond traditional machinist work. This role requires a well-rounded individual who can adapt to various tasks throughout the facility, including:

• Machining and Fabrication: Operate manual machinery such as surface grinders, lathes, and mills to fabricate, repair, and reverse-engineer parts for industrial equipment, ensuring that all components meet specifications. This will involve working on molds for injection mold machines and components for can manufacturing equipment.
• Facility Maintenance: Beyond machining, you will be responsible for a range of maintenance tasks around the facility, including plumbing, electrical, and general building repairs. This could involve anything from repairing toilets to handling basic wiring and system troubleshooting.
• Machine Building and Repair: Utilize your expertise to build and assemble machinery and the individual parts needed for larger equipment. This includes reverse-engineering existing parts and creating precise replicas or improved versions.
• Leadership and Training: Oversee a small team of direct reports, providing guidance and leadership. You will also be expected to train under the Machine Shop Foreman to learn the company’s “old-school” processes, including the paperwork and documentation required for effective maintenance and production tracking.
• Quality Assurance and Documentation: Conduct quality control checks on fabricated parts, ensuring dimensions and specifications are met. Maintain detailed records of maintenance and production activities following established procedures.

The role is designed for someone who is not only skilled in machinist work but is also willing to adapt to various tasks, showing a strong work ethic and flexibility in handling both machine and facility maintenance.

Key Responsibilities:

• Machinery Operation: Operate lathes, mills, surface grinders, and other shop equipment to fabricate and repair metal and plastic components for industrial equipment.
• Blueprint Reading & Interpretation: Read and interpret technical drawings and blueprints to ensure accurate part specifications.
• Tool Setup & Maintenance: Calibrate, set up, and maintain tools and equipment while troubleshooting issues to minimize downtime.
• Quality Control: Perform quality checks to verify dimensions and surface finishes meet specifications, ensuring precision and accuracy.
• Safety & Compliance: Follow all safety protocols and environmental regulations, maintaining a clean and safe working environment.
• Preventive Maintenance & Troubleshooting: Conduct scheduled maintenance and diagnose issues involving mechanical, hydraulic, pneumatic, and electrical systems.
• Equipment Installation & Adjustments: Install, adjust, and calibrate new equipment, ensuring optimal functionality.
• Record Keeping: Maintain detailed logs of production, quality, and maintenance activities, while planning stock inventory and spare parts.
• Collaboration: Work closely with engineers, co-workers, and external contractors, providing guidance on maintenance needs and assisting in on-site projects.

Qualifications:

• Traditional Machinist Experience: Proven hands-on experience as a machinist, particularly in a traditional machine shop setting, with expertise in operating manual machinery such as lathes, mills, and grinders for tool and die making.
• Completion of a formal machinist apprenticeship program or equivalent training.
• 5+ years of experience in a machine shop or industrial setting.
• Proficiency in operating and maintaining manual machinery, such as lathes, mills, and grinders.
• Strong mechanical aptitude and troubleshooting skills for mechanical, electrical, hydraulic, and pneumatic components.
• Ability to read and interpret blueprints, technical manuals, and engineering schematics.
• Familiarity with preventive maintenance programs and industrial safety standards.
• Forklift and crane operation experience is a plus.
• Strong problem-solving, communication, and organizational skills.
• Ability to lift up to 50 pounds and perform repetitive tasks safely.

Preferred Skills:

• Experience in basic drafting and engineering drawing interpretation.
• Ability to work independently and as part of a team in a fast-paced environment.
